The Two Most Important Things to Look For!
1) Make sure your DJ has a TON of Wedding Experience
This is the single most important piece of information we can offer you. There are different kinds of wedding DJs, the kind who do local bars and random social events, and the ones who perform at wedding receptions, OFTEN!
DJs that perform at graduation parties and/or nightclubs know how to play to the 20-something crowd, whereas, DJs that specialize in weddings understand the variety and mix that needs to be played to entertain the age 8-80 crowd. There is a tremendous difference.
2) Ask them how they will coordinate your wedding
A great wedding DJ doesn’t just play the music and make random announcements on the microphone… they coordinate your entire reception. If you’ve been to a reception and felt like the night just dragged in a disorderly way, it was probably the direct result of hiring a bad wedding DJ.
Your DJ is responsible for organizing every event that occurs at your reception, from the grand entrance, the cake cutting, the toast and grace, the special dances and traditions. Not only does he make the announcements for those events, but he lets you, your bridal party, parents, photographer, videographer, and anyone else that is involved, know what’s coming up and when. He’ll be sure champagne is poured for the toast, so your guests aren’t raising empty glasses. Cake-cutting utensils are on the table, so a 10 minute affair doesn’t turn into a half hour long event.
The list of responsibilities your DJ holds is endless. If your reception is at a home, it’s even more important to ensure you’ve hired a great organizer, as you lack the banquet hall’s direction.
